Zelensky after the meeting with Trump: "We discussed the licenses for the production of interceptors for the Patriot system"
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House. The leaders discussed the production of Patriot systems and the advancement of the diplomatic process.
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on Tuesday at the White House. Zelensky told the media that he had a "good meeting with Trump in the Oval Office." The discussion focused on granting licenses for the production of Patriot systems and the revival of peace talks.
In a written statement following the meeting, Zelensky noted:
"A good meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office. I thanked him for everything we are doing together to protect the lives of Ukrainians and achieve peace. First and foremost, I conveyed to President Trump our condolences on the death of Lindsey Graham. He was a true friend of Ukraine."
"We discussed with the President the licenses for the production of interceptors for the Patriot system. We also talked about diplomacy — it is important to increase the political process. Our teams will summarize the details of further communication between them," he added.
Last December, Trump and Zelensky met and stated they were "very close" to an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, though that meeting ended without a significant breakthrough. Previously, both leaders spoke at a joint press conference at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where they claimed progress on security guarantees for Ukraine and the division of the Donbas region. Zelensky said an agreement had been reached regarding security guarantees. Trump was more cautious, noting they are 95% of the way to such an agreement and that he expects European countries to "take on a large part" of the effort with American backing. Some European leaders participated in part of the meeting.
