The Israel Internet Association is calling on the Israeli public to back up all important information stored on WhatsApp as soon as possible, following a mysterious wave of blocks that has affected hundreds of users in Israel in recent days. The association warns that this phenomenon may expand and that the root cause remains unclear.
Over the weekend, dozens of inquiries reached the Israel Internet Association's safe internet hotline from users reporting that their WhatsApp accounts were blocked without any apparent reason. Even after submitting an appeal through the application, users remained locked out of their accounts and all associated data.
The Israel Internet Association stated that they have contacted Meta with an urgent request to assist affected users and explain the source of the malfunction, but no response has been received yet. It appears to be a technical error that has not been addressed. The association reminded the public that WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in Israel, used by 99% of the adult population, and that Meta is the only entity capable of restoring blocked accounts.
The warning follows a report published on mako on Thursday, stating that hundreds of Israelis found their accounts suddenly blocked despite not violating any terms of service. Many reported losing access to chats, groups, and critical personal or business information, with appeals failing to restore access.
The Israel Internet Association advises those whose accounts have been blocked not to fall for paid offers from third parties claiming they can remove the block. To their knowledge, no external party has this capability, and users must submit appeals through the official block notification and contact WhatsApp directly.
For all users, the association recommends backing up photos, documents, messages, and important information stored in the app immediately and preparing alternative communication methods in case of future blocks.
"The current wave of blocks is another reminder of the centralization and over-reliance of the public in Israel on an application that, unfortunately, does not provide an adequate response in the event of a malfunction," the association stated. "We call on the state to demand full transparency from Meta in handling the malfunction and an immediate response for Israelis who have been left without a central and vital communication tool."
Meta responded:
"We are constantly working to stay ahead of users who try to abuse our platform, and we work to block their accounts to help keep users safe. Sometimes we make mistakes, and when that happens, we work to fix the situation as quickly as possible to allow people to return to using WhatsApp."
