The Waldkliniken Eisenberg hospital in Thuringia, Germany, has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Grand Hospital Award by the International Hospital Federation (IHF). This marks the first time in history that a German medical facility has received the top global recognition, competing against more than 750 nominations from 38 countries worldwide.

The official award ceremony takes place today in Eisenberg, featuring Federal Health Minister Carsten Linnemann and Thuringia Minister-President Mario Voigt. The municipal public hospital secured the honor not only for its medical excellence and innovative management, but also for its exceptional social vision, including a comprehensive care program tailored for Jewish patients.

Comprehensive Care and Jewish Heritage

The facility features an active synagogue inaugurated in May 2022, equipped with its own Torah scroll and seating for 16 worshippers. Furnishings were specially imported from Kibbutz Lavi in Israel. Designed by Italian architect Matteo Thun, the hospital also incorporates kosher kitchen facilities under supervision and technical solutions allowing patients to observe Shabbat.

Hospital CEO David-Ruben Thies noted that the initiative stems from a personal mission to redefine healthcare standards while honoring diverse cultural and religious needs. With 254 beds and approximately 900 employees, the German Centre for Orthopaedics housed within the hospital stands as one of Europe's largest university orthopedic centers.
