WhatsApp channels have become one of the primary tools for consuming content, news, and updates directly within the app over the past year. Now, a new update in the beta version of the app for Android (version 2.26.30.5) introduces a small change in the interface designed to solve exactly this problem.
What changes at the moment of clicking?
Until now, a user who clicked the "Follow" button on a channel saw the button change to a followed status, while the channel remained muted in the background without any explanation. In the new version, as soon as you click follow, the button will immediately be replaced by a pop-up message in the same spot, which will inform you that the channel is muted and offer you to turn on notifications with one easy click.
The default remains, but awareness increases
WhatsApp notes that the muted default setting was intended from the start to protect users from countless pop-up notifications in particularly active channels. The new update does not change this default, but simply raises awareness of the option to enable notifications.
"Do you want to receive updates in real-time? Click immediately on the pop-up suggestion and turn on the sound. Prefer silence? Ignore the message and the channel will remain muted as usual."
A significant development for channel administrators
For content creators and channel administrators who invest significant resources in managing the channel, this is a small change with great significance. A muted channel is a transparent channel — users simply do not enter it if they do not receive an indication of a new update. The immediate reminder upon joining is expected to increase the percentage of users who will enable notifications, thereby dramatically increasing the rate of views on posts over time.
