The problem began to emerge shortly after the March 2026 update. Users discovered that the device's GNSS component (satellite navigation system) failed repeatedly in its attempt to enter power-saving mode. As a result, the processor could not reach a deep sleep state (Deep Doze) and continued to work hard in the background. The bug was so persistent that the battery drain continued even when the device was in airplane mode and all its connectivity was completely turned off.
Although the first reports came from owners of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, it quickly became clear that the problem was much broader. Similar complaints flowed from users of the Pixel 7, 8, and 9, and even from some owners of Samsung Galaxy devices. This suggests that it may be a deeper issue related to the Android operating system itself or the devices' chipset.
The fix has arrived, but there is an asterisk
Google recently marked the bug as "resolved" in its bug tracking system. According to the company, the fix has already been integrated into the July update for the Pixel 9 series and the new Pixel 10. In contrast, owners of the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9a models will have to wait patiently until the quarterly update in September to receive the long-awaited solution for their device.
Despite the official statements, users in the field are still not convinced that the trouble is behind them. Google did not mention the bug fix in the official changelog of the July update, and many users continue to report severe battery drain even after installing it. Until Google provides a clear explanation or a proven dedicated update, it is recommended to wait and monitor your battery consumption closely in standby mode.
