The United States reportedly flew an American diplomat out of Britain without notifying British authorities, following suspicions that he possessed images of child sexual abuse. According to reports in the British newspapers "Daily Mail" and "The Sun", UK officials were only informed of the investigation after the diplomat had already left the country.
The American investigation reportedly began after suspicions arose that the diplomat's brother, residing in the United States, sent him explicit imagery. Last month, US investigators raided the diplomat's London apartment, where the materials were allegedly discovered. He was subsequently taken to a US Air Force base in the UK and flown back to America.
"They were supposed to tell Scotland Yard when they carried out the raid, and certainly when they found material. Instead, we think they took him to a US air base and flew him more than 6,400 kilometers away," a source told the "Daily Mail".
British Outrage and Diplomatic Fallout
Flight records cited by British media reinforced suspicions that the diplomat was covertly evacuated by US personnel. Records show that a Boeing 747-4R7F aircraft operated by Kalitta Air flew from Chicago to the Royal Air Force base in Fairford on August 24. The following day, coinciding with the raid, the aircraft departed Fairford and landed at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
British police confirmed they were notified of the suspicions on August 25. An official statement noted: "On August 25, US authorities updated us on an investigation they are conducting regarding offenses that allegedly occurred in London." The operation caused friction in the UK over the circumvention of local law enforcement, though the British government issued a more measured response, stating it expects all foreign diplomats to obey local laws.
