Windows 11 update causes game crashes and computer malfunctions
Security update KB5121003, released as mandatory and fixing over 400 vulnerabilities, is reportedly causing game crashes, connection and display issues, and even system crashes. Microsoft has already launched an investigation, but there is no official solution yet.
The major Windows 11 security update for August was intended to close hundreds of vulnerabilities and enhance computer security. However, for some users, it brought an entirely different set of problems: games crashing, connection errors, display issues, and in some cases, crashes of the operating system itself.
According to a report by Windows Latest, the issues began after installing update KB5121003, which Microsoft released on August 11 as a mandatory update. This is the primary security update for Windows 11 for the current month, including fixes for more than 400 security vulnerabilities. However, alongside the fixes, it appears to have introduced a series of new bugs into the system.
The problem is particularly prominent among gamers, with an increase in reports of games crashing unexpectedly following the update. Two of the titles hit particularly hard are ARC Raiders and The Finals by Embark Games. Reports suggest the source of the malfunction may be a compatibility issue between the update and a specific system driver.
Embark is already working on a solution for its games, but has not yet provided a timeline for its release. In the meantime, the company is offering a temporary workaround: opening the Windows command prompt and disabling the problematic driver, as detailed in the PC World report.
There is also a simpler option, but with a significant cost: completely removing KB5121003 through the Windows update history settings. The issue is that removing the update reverts the computer to a state where hundreds of security vulnerabilities that the update was intended to fix remain open. In other words, those who remove it might resolve the crashes, but in doing so, they forfeit an important layer of security.
Microsoft has responded to the reports and launched an investigation, but has not yet announced a fix or a schedule for its release. The company is asking users who encounter malfunctions to report them via the Windows Feedback Hub, likely to collect more data and isolate the source of the problem.
Until then, affected users are left with two suboptimal choices: remain with an important security update that may cause malfunctions, or remove it and remain exposed to the hundreds of vulnerabilities it was intended to close.
