Another reason to drink coffee in the morning: Links to lower body fat and higher muscle mass
A new study from the University of Oulu in Finland has identified an intriguing link between daily coffee consumption and body composition, suggesting that higher intake correlates with lower body fat and increased muscle mass.

A new study from the University of Oulu in Finland has identified an intriguing link between one of the world's most popular beverages and body composition: individuals who consumed more coffee daily tended to have a lower percentage of body fat and higher muscle mass. Researchers examined over 2,200 participants, comparing their coffee habits with body fat, muscle metrics, and indicators of how the body processes sugar and fats. However, the results indicate a correlation rather than a direct causal link.
The researchers gathered detailed information from participants regarding their health status, diet, physical activity, medications, and lifestyle habits. Responses regarding daily coffee consumption varied significantly, ranging from non-drinkers to those consuming five or more cups per day.
An important caveat to the study is that it did not specify cup size, preparation methods, or the addition of milk, sugar, or other additives. Following an overnight fast, researchers assessed body fat and muscle mass, performed blood tests, and administered a glucose tolerance test to monitor metabolic responses over two hours.
Findings and Metabolic Markers
When comparing the data, a clear pattern emerged: higher coffee consumption was associated with lower total body fat, greater skeletal muscle mass, and reduced visceral fat—the fat stored deep in the abdomen surrounding internal organs. High levels of visceral fat are particularly concerning, as they are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, the researchers caution that this does not mean coffee "burns" fat or builds muscle. Other lifestyle factors common among coffee drinkers may contribute to these findings. The study also noted that higher coffee intake was associated with lower levels of three branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Previous research has linked elevated levels of these amino acids to insulin resistance and a higher risk of diabetes.
A Complex Picture
Researchers warn against jumping to conclusions, as the overall picture is complex. In men, higher coffee consumption was also linked to higher levels of certain cholesterol-carrying particles and lower omega-3 fat indicators. Furthermore, gender differences were observed regarding sugar balance; men showed a stronger link between coffee consumption and lower fasting insulin levels compared to women.
Luka Vuoristo, who led the study, explained that despite coffee's immense popularity, many questions remain: "Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, and yet we still know surprisingly little about its connection to our metabolism and hormones." She added that the unique hormonal patterns identified persisted even after adjusting for BMI and lifestyle factors, highlighting the need for further research.
