A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the western coast of Colombia today, Monday, causing widespread panic across large areas of the country.
According to data from the Colombian Geological Service, the event occurred at 07:34 local time. The epicenter was located near the town of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, at a depth of approximately 82 kilometers. While this depth generally mitigates the intensity of surface destruction, it expands the range of felt vibrations.
Many residents, including those in the capital, Bogotá, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter, reported strong tremors. Reports of significant vibrations were also received from the departments of Antioquia, Cundinamarca, and Meta.
Following the event, Colombian authorities activated national emergency protocols. Dedicated teams have begun extensive inspections in areas near the epicenter to assess potential infrastructure damage and check for casualties. According to a report by the Spanish newspaper "El País," no official estimate regarding the extent of damage or casualties has been published at this stage.
