Footballer murdered in Kampala suburb after being beaten with stones
Uganda mourns the death of David Owori, captain of the national champion SC Villa, who was brutally attacked in the capital. "He was a leader and a key player in the team," the club stated.
Ugandan footballer David Owori was murdered near his home in a suburb of Kampala during a robbery. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. This marks the second death of a footballer in the country this week, following the passing of another player who died due to a severe injury sustained during a match.
Owori, 27, the captain of the national champion SC Villa, was considered one of the league's most prominent players. The attack occurred around 20:00. According to police and club reports, unknown assailants beat him with stones, stole his belongings, and fled the scene, leaving him unconscious.
Local residents transported Owori to a nearby clinic, from where he was transferred to the Case Clinic. Doctors were unable to save him, and his death was confirmed shortly after. The Kampala police have launched an investigation and a manhunt for the attackers, while the motive for the incident remains under examination.
Club statement
SC Villa released an official statement following the incident:
"We are grieving the death of our captain, David Owori, who was a leader and a key player in the team. We share in the family's grief and call on the security forces to act quickly to bring those responsible to justice."
The incident follows another tragedy in Ugandan football this week, involving the death of Rogers Ssewankambo, a player for the Bulamzi team. Ssewankambo suffered a severe injury after colliding in the air with an opposing goalkeeper and landing hard on the pitch. He was evacuated to Mulago National Hospital, but his condition deteriorated, and he passed away before surgery could be performed.
