Trump threatens Iran after missile fire at US bases in Jordan: "We will hit them hard"
The US President clarified that Washington will respond to the missile launch towards forces in Jordan: "There will be a response". According to him, most of the missiles were intercepted, and another missile was not intercepted after it became clear it would not hit anything. Alongside the military threat, Trump claimed that the Iranians "want to meet so badly" – but cast doubt on the possibility of reaching an agreement with them.
United States President Donald Trump threatened today, Monday, a harsh response against Iran, after Tehran launched ballistic missiles towards American forces in Jordan in response to the American attack on Larak Island.
"We are going to hit them hard. There will be a response," Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
According to the American president, defense systems intercepted the missiles launched towards the American forces, except for one. Trump claimed that the forces identified that the missile was not expected to hit a significant target and therefore did not intercept it. An American official also told Fox News that no significant damage was recorded following the fire, which included at least eight ballistic missiles.
Alongside the threat of further military response, Trump left an opening for renewing contacts with Tehran. "They want to meet so badly," he said, but immediately qualified: "I just don't know if you can trust a deal with them." The president added that the sanctions imposed by the USA on Iran are starting to have a very strong effect.
Shortly before the remarks published on Fox News, Trump sharpened the tone on the Truth social network as well. "Iran is officially a failed nation. It is dead!", the president wrote, and claimed again that it no longer has a navy, air force, or functioning currency and that its leadership is in complete chaos. Trump also attacked the regime's conduct towards protesters in the country and claimed that the Iranian leadership is no longer capable of properly representing the country.
The statement comes after a night of exchanges of blows between the USA and Iran. American forces attacked two launchers of the Revolutionary Guards on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, after identifying preparations for launching rockets intended to place naval mines in the international shipping lane. In the United States Central Command, they defined the attack as a limited and precise action against a force that posed an immediate threat to commercial shipping and traffic in the strait.
In response to the attack, Iran launched missiles towards American bases in Jordan. The Revolutionary Guards took responsibility for the fire and threatened that the USA would pay a heavy economic and military price. According to the Jordanian army, the kingdom's air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that penetrated its airspace.
