Trump Weighs Future of US Ambassador to Greece Amid Financial Scandal

US President Donald Trump stated that his administration is reviewing the tenure of US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, following an investigative report revealing she asked a major Republican donor to cover her personal expenses. "We are looking at it. Yes, we are not happy," Trump said regarding the controversy threatening the diplomat's position.

According to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle reached out to Eric Deters, a prominent Trump donor and former congressional candidate from Kentucky, prior to her Senate confirmation hearing last year. In Signal messages, she reportedly asked him to transfer USD 100,000 to cover her American Express bill. Deters ultimately declined the request.

"This won't show up anywhere if you wire it directly to American Express. Please," she wrote, according to the report.

Investigation and White House Discussions

Following the disclosure, the State Department's Office of the Inspector General launched an inquiry to determine whether Guilfoyle accepted gifts or favors from private businessmen. The Wall Street Journal also published a recording in which the diplomat bragged that Greek tycoons funded a flight to Paris and a luxury hotel stay for her.

Over the weekend, senior officials in the Trump administration discussed whether Guilfoyle can remain in her post. Her attorney, Jesse Binnall, disputed the authenticity of the messages and claimed she was owed payment for past patriotic events, though Deters insisted he owed her nothing. Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers Robert Garcia and Don Beyer have called for her dismissal and potential prosecution for alleged public corruption.
