"Torture and abuse - a cruel policy": B'Tselem organization is outraged by the arrest of a doctor from Ramallah
Israeli forces raided the home of Dr. Dima Amin due to the publication of over one hundred posts, for which she is suspected of harming state security. Her family members were unable to locate her for about 30 hours and did not know where she was being held or what her condition was - and only later did it emerge that she had suffered a cardiac event during her arrest.
Dr. Dima Amin, a physician residing in Ramallah, was arrested at her home on Tuesday morning by Israeli forces following posts she published on Facebook.
Dr. Amin is suspected of incitement, harming security, and supporting a hostile organization after publishing more than one hundred posts on social media. According to testimonies from her family members and neighbors, the arrest was accompanied by a violent break-in, broken doors, and property damage.
After she was taken from her home, her family was unable to locate her for about 30 hours and did not know her whereabouts or condition. Only later did it emerge that she had suffered a cardiac event during the arrest and was transferred to a hospital in Jerusalem, where she underwent a catheterization.
Despite her medical condition, her detention was extended by five days at the military court in Ofer, with the judge noting reasonable suspicion against her. She is currently being held at the Russian Compound detention center in Jerusalem.
"Physical violence, humiliation, denial of medical treatment - and inhumane living conditions"
During the military court hearing, her lawyer claimed that during her transfer and hospitalization, Amin was tightly handcuffed, with visible marks on her wrists.
B'Tselem states that Dr. Amin's case joins numerous testimonies received in recent months regarding the incarceration conditions of Palestinians in Israeli detention facilities.
According to the organization, since October 2023, the Israeli incarceration system has become a mechanism of systematic abuse, including physical violence, humiliation, denial of medical care, and inhumane living conditions. B'Tselem reports that at least 90 Palestinian detainees and prisoners have died during this period.
"Dr. Amin is one of more than 9,300 Palestinians currently held in the Israeli incarceration system, where abuse and inhumane conditions have become routine," said B'Tselem CEO Yuli Novak.
According to Novak, "The story of Dr. Amin illustrates the cruelty of this system: a 55-year-old doctor undergoes a cardiac event and catheterization while in Israeli custody, yet is returned to detention. This is what a policy that terrorizes a civilian population and normalizes torture and abuse looks like."
