A dangerous viral trend spreading on social media platforms like TikTok is putting young people at risk of severe injuries and life-threatening burns. Content creators have been filming themselves heating hard-boiled eggs in microwave ovens before biting into them or cutting them open, unaware of the explosive physical reaction that follows.

According to food technology experts, microwaving a hard-boiled egg traps water molecules inside tiny pockets within the yolk. As the microwaves heat these pockets, the water can become superheated, exceeding normal boiling temperatures while remaining contained by the cooked albumen. This creates an unstable, high-pressure environment.

The Physics of Microwave Explosions

The pressure inside the egg continues to build even after it is removed from the microwave. The moment the egg's structural integrity is compromised—such as through a knife cut or a bite—the superheated water instantly converts to steam, causing a violent explosion that sprays boiling contents in all directions.

Dr. Yoed Prococimer, a pediatrician with Clalit Health Services in the Dan-Petah Tikva district, warns that these sudden bursts frequently occur close to the victim's face, leading to severe injuries. Boiling contents can cause deep second- and third-degree facial burns, damaging the lips, nose, eyelids, and delicate eye tissues.

Medical Dangers and First Aid

One of the most perilous scenarios involves the egg detonating directly inside the mouth. This can severely burn the tongue, palate, and pharynx, potentially causing laryngeal edema that constricts the airway and creates an immediate danger to life. Ocular injuries can likewise result in permanent vision impairment or corneal damage.

In the event of an accident, medical professionals advise cooling the burn area immediately under running cool water for approximately 20 minutes. Avoid applying ice, oils, or butter. Eye injuries require urgent ophthalmological evaluation, while any signs of breathing difficulty, hoarseness, or throat swelling necessitate emergency medical intervention.
