Former Miss Thailand Arrested in Bangkok Over $24M Charity Fraud
Former Miss Thailand Panadda Wongphudee and her husband were arrested in Bangkok over allegations of diverting millions in charity funds for luxury real estate and personal expenses.
Former Miss Thailand Panadda Wongphudee and her husband, businessman Atip Anantawan, were arrested in Bangkok on Friday, November 6, on charges of public fraud, money laundering, and computer crimes related to charitable fundraising. A local court extended their detention by 12 days until November 18. Both suspects denied the allegations during police questioning.
The 50-year-old former beauty queen and television personality was detained outside her residence as police executed search and arrest warrants. Officers accompanied her inside to gather evidence before transferring her to the central investigation headquarters. "I'm willing to go through the legal process," she told reporters, adding, "I'm sorry, everyone."
At the center of the investigation is the Do Good Foundation, established by Wongphudee. According to police findings presented on Saturday, investigators traced approximately 815 million baht in donations, of which roughly 527 million baht was allegedly diverted away from the foundation's charitable objectives. Authorities are probing expenditures that included luxury pool villas, high-end goods, life insurance payments, and credit card debt settlements.
Investigators allege that substantial sums were transferred to private accounts, including 249 million baht to Wongphudee and 99 million baht to her husband. Anantawan faces money laundering charges, and his bail request was denied over concerns of potential evidence tampering or witness interference. Wongphudee did not submit a bail application during the hearing.
Wongphudee won the Miss Thailand title in 2000 and subsequently built a career as an actress and television host, later establishing her relief network which was officially registered as a foundation in 2022. Prior to her arrest on October 29, the foundation announced her temporary suspension as chairperson and halted donation collections pending an internal audit. Law enforcement agencies conducted searches across four sites linked to the couple as financial examinations continue.
