Behind the scenes, the name of the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst, is being raised as a possible alternative. Senior officials warn: "Removing a chancellor will lead to instability and the strengthening of extremists."
A little over a year after taking office, Chancellor Friedrich Merz finds himself at the center of an unusual political storm in Germany. A report published on Friday in Politico magazine reveals that within the ruling party, there are growing discussions about the possibility of replacing him.
This dramatic move is being considered against the backdrop of a sharp drop in the Chancellor's popularity, deep internal disagreements, and, above all, heavy concern over the results of the regional elections expected this coming September. The main concern in the political system stems from the strengthening of the far-right party AfD, which is expected to record significant achievements in the regional elections and even lead a government in a German state for the first time.
National polls are intensifying the political pressure: the AfD party currently stands as the most popular in Germany with about 28% support, while Merz's party lags behind with only about 21%. At the same time, satisfaction with Merz's performance is at historical lows — only 13% of Germans are satisfied with his performance, the lowest rate ever measured for an incumbent chancellor.
According to the report in Politico, the scenario being examined behind the scenes includes replacing Merz with the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst. However, the move is far from being agreed upon. Senior party officials continue to express public support for Merz and warn against the consequences of such a step:
"Replacing a chancellor at the current time could completely undermine political stability in the country, lead to early elections, and ultimately lead to further strengthening of extremist elements."
