Spotify Unveils AI-Powered Remix Tool
Spotify is expanding its AI-driven project that allows listeners to create covers and remixes. The Merlin organization has joined Universal in this initiative, bringing over 30,000 independent labels into the ecosystem.

Streaming giant Spotify is taking a significant step forward in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). During its latest earnings call, the company revealed details about a new tool that will allow fans to create covers and remixes of songs by their favorite artists. The process will be conducted with the full consent of the creators, ensuring proper credit and fair financial compensation.
The scope of the project is growing: the licensing body Merlin, which represents independent labels and distributors, has joined the initiative alongside music giant Universal. This integration will bring over 30,000 independent labels from around the world into the system. Spotify emphasizes that, unlike controversial AI companies that generate fake songs from scratch, their tool focuses on real musicians.
The new feature is expected to launch initially as a trial for a limited group of users and will later be offered as a paid add-on, providing artists with a new revenue stream. The company clarified that artists will not be required to upload their entire catalog to participate, though an official launch date has not yet been revealed.
This move comes against the backdrop of an unprecedented influx of AI-generated music on streaming services. For example, Deezer recently reported that more than half of the songs uploaded daily are produced using this technology. Spotify is convinced that this is the first legal way to allow listeners to participate in the creative process without infringing on copyrights.
