Spain is bracing for one of its most dramatic political showdowns in decades, as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called snap elections for November 29 following nationwide protests over a severe housing crisis. Opinion polls indicate a strong lead for the conservative People's Party, which could potentially form a governing coalition with the far-right Vox party. If this scenario materializes, it would mark the first time since the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 that a far-right party enters the Spanish government.

Sanchez, who has served as prime minister since 2018 and is known as a political survivor, is attempting to pivot the public agenda away from corruption scandals and migration issues, betting that the housing crisis will become his political lifeline. The nationwide outrage was crystallized last month by the eviction of an 87-year-old Madrid woman, Maria del Carmen Abascal, widely known as Maricarmen, who was carried from her home on a stretcher under a court order. Her subsequent passing added a poignant layer of grief and political tension to the electoral landscape.

The conservative People's Party, led by Alberto Nunez Feijoo, holds about 33% in recent polling averages, while Sanchez's Socialists trail with 26%. Vox stands third with approximately 18%, positioning itself to potentially double its previous parliamentary representation and secure significant ministerial influence. While Feijoo's party has condemned the October 7 Hamas massacre and recognized Israel's right to defend itself while criticizing military operations in Gaza, Vox maintains a distinctly pro-Israel stance, opposing arms embargoes and maintaining close political ties with Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

As Spain approaches the November 29 ballot, voters face a historic crossroads. They must decide whether to grant the embattled socialist coalition another mandate to address domestic economic pressures or to open the door to a conservative-nationalist administration for the first time in nearly half a century.
