Spain Announces First Squad Since 2026 World Cup Triumph for Nations League

Spain's national team has officially begun a new era as reigning world champions. Head coach Luis de la Fuente announced his first squad on Friday since winning the 2026 World Cup, ahead of four upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against England, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.

Squad Updates and Key Returnees

While the core of the World Cup-winning squad has been preserved, De la Fuente made four changes compared to the 26 players who traveled to the tournament. Each department features at least one new face, sending a clear message that the door remains open for in-form players.

One of the most notable returns is Fermin Lopez. The Barcelona midfielder was a regular fixture before suffering a foot injury in the final match of last season, forcing him to miss the World Cup. After a strong start to the current campaign, he returns to the squad at the expense of Gavi.

Defensive and Goalkeeping Adjustments

Gavi, who started Spain's World Cup opener against Cape Verde, has barely played recently due to a persistent knee issue and was left out. In defense, Dean Huijsen returns after missing the World Cup cut. The Real Madrid center-back was rewarded for his strong early-season form, while Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill provide tactical flexibility across the backline.

In goal, an injury to Joan Garcia opened the door for Inter Milan's Josep Martinez. Joan Garcia is suffering from right knee pain after slipping in a match against Racing, prompting Martinez's call-up.

Upcoming Nations League Fixtures

"We are beginning a new chapter with two stars on our crest, fully aware that the challenge ahead is greater than ever," the coaching staff noted.

Spain will begin its Nations League campaign on September 26 with an away match against England at Wembley. On September 29, they will host Croatia in Seville, face the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3, and conclude the international window three days later away against Croatia in Split.
