Suspicion: 24-year-old man smuggled illegal immigrants into Israel and ran them over - one died
A 24-year-old suspect was located in Beersheba after allegedly smuggling three illegal immigrants into Israel, running them over, and causing the death of one of them. Police officers located his vehicle under a water conduit, and after the suspect was found, he was taken for interrogation.
A vehicle located under a water conduit was discovered by police officers conducting searches in the seam zone area, which aroused their suspicion. The vehicle was thoroughly checked, and a theory was raised that it belongs to a resident of Dura in the Hebron district, who is wanted on suspicion of being involved in the murder of an illegal immigrant and the serious injury of two others, who were moderately wounded.
Two of the victims stated during their interrogation that the suspect had smuggled them across the border into Israeli territory. According to the suspicion, after they got out of the vehicle, he drove a short distance away, then turned the vehicle around and, as suspected, drove toward them at high speed and struck all three with great force, and then fled the scene without providing them any assistance. One of the victims was critically injured, and a medical team summoned to treat him was forced to declare his death. His two companions were taken for medical treatment at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, where they were also interrogated and then treated in accordance with the existing policy in Israel regarding illegal immigrants.
Investigators from the Rotem District investigation unit began searching for the suspect in the fatal incident. The 24-year-old suspect was located in Beersheba and taken for interrogation:
"This is a complex investigation that was conducted with determination, speed, and professionalism. The combination of the operational and investigative capabilities of the unit's investigators led in a short time to the location of the suspect, his arrest, and the formation of a significant evidentiary basis that describes his actions and testifies to them," said Lieutenant Colonel Dudu Avraham, commander of the Rotem unit.
The investigation materials on the matter were transferred to the Southern District Attorney's Office, and upon completion of its review, a prosecutor's statement was submitted to the Beersheba District Court regarding the intention to file an indictment against him for offenses of causing death and illegal presence in Israel. Along with the prosecutor's statement, the Southern District Attorney filed a request to detain him until the end of the legal proceedings against him.
