Third Foreigner: Qudus Wahab Signs with Maccabi Ashdod
The 26-year-old Nigerian center (2.11m), who led the Greek league in blocks two years ago and previously played under Patrick Ewing at Georgetown, joins Dan Katsir's squad following a season with Cholet in the Champions League.
After a few quiet weeks, Maccabi Ashdod made another move this evening (Thursday) ahead of the upcoming season by signing Nigerian center Qudus Wahab, who played last season for Cholet in the French league. Wahab is the first significant frontcourt player signed by Dan Katsir for the new campaign.
Wahab (26, 2.11m) arrived in the United States from Nigeria at the age of 15. After high school, he joined Georgetown, playing under Patrick Ewing. In his second season with the Hoyas, he impressed with 12.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, before surprising many with a transfer to Maryland. After one season, he returned to Georgetown and finished his college career at Penn State, where he averaged 10 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.
In the summer of 2024, he moved to Europe, signing with the Greek team Lavrio. In the Greek first division, he recorded 9.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and led the league in blocks with 1.1 per game. Last year, he played for the French team Cholet, including in the BCL, where he averaged 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in European competition.
Wahab is the third foreign player to sign with Ashdod for the next season, joining Robert Turner and Isaiah Hill. The team has also retained naturalized player Ben Callahan-Gold and added Israelis Shawn Dawson, Omer Ben David, and Ziv Weissman.
