Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi Rejects Smotrich's Offer to Join Religious Zionism List
Religious Zionism leader Bezalel Smotrich offered Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi a spot on his electoral list, which Davidi rejected. Meanwhile, Beer Sheva Mayor Rubik Danilovich declined a high-ranking offer to join the Likud party list.
The chairman of the Religious Zionism party, Bezalel Smotrich, met last Friday with the mayor of Sderot, Alon Davidi, and offered him a spot on the party's slate for the upcoming Knesset elections. As of now, Davidi has rejected the political overtures and is unwilling to join Smotrich, who has until Monday at 22:00 to submit his final candidate list.
Davidi's name has been on Smotrich's radar for a long time. As previously reported, the Religious Zionism leader identified him as a key figure he wished to recruit in order to expand the party's boundaries and attract new audiences beyond its traditional base.
Within the Religious Zionism party, Davidi is viewed as a significant electoral asset: a southern mayor deeply identified with Sderot and its years of resilience against threats from the Gaza Strip. He is a well-known figure within the national-religious public, yet one who is not exclusively identified with the Judea and Samaria settlement movement. His addition could assist Smotrich precisely where he seeks to strengthen his appeal—expanding the party's reach to the periphery and traditional right-wing voters.
Municipal Leaders Reject National Party Offers
In a parallel political development, Rubik Danilovich, who has served as the mayor of Beer Sheva for the past 18 years, has reportedly rejected an offer from the Likud party for a guaranteed high spot on its electoral list.
High-ranking Likud officials recently approached the Beer Sheva mayor with the offer of a secured realistic spot on the party's slate. In response, the mayor stated that he does not comment on political offers he receives.
According to political sources, Danilovich has decided to remain in his municipal role. In the past, Danilovich has received multiple political offers from various parties in both the center and right-wing blocs, all of which he has consistently declined.
