Six days after the flood disaster in Nepal: Another Israeli woman is defined as missing
Another Israeli is still missing in the border area with Tibet, after contact with the group of travelers he was with was cut off following the flood.
Katerina (Katya) Skovich, a 41-year-old Israeli who also holds Belarusian citizenship, has been defined as missing since the floods in Nepal. This brings the number of Israelis defined as missing following the disaster to two. Another Israeli is missing after being with a group of travelers in the border area between Nepal and Tibet; contact with the group was cut off shortly after the flood hit the area. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in contact with Skovich's family and is working with local authorities in an attempt to locate her. According to updated data in Nepal, 903 people have died and 4,247 are still defined as missing.
Six days after the deadly flood disaster in Nepal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed today, Monday, that another Israeli woman is defined as missing. She is 41-year-old Katerina (Katya) Skovich, an Israeli citizen who also holds Belarusian citizenship, and with whom there has been no contact since the disaster.
The Israeli consul in Kathmandu and the Department for Israelis in Distress Abroad at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are in constant contact with Skovich's family and are working with local authorities and entities in an attempt to locate her.
Another Israeli is still defined as missing after being in the border area between Nepal and Tibet. He was part of a group of 77 foreign travelers who returned from a Kailash Mansarovar trek and arrived at the immigration center in Gyirong, on the Tibetan side of the border.
The organization's contact persons spoke with the group leader just about ten minutes before the flood hit the area, and at that stage, there was no prior sign of the disaster. Shortly thereafter, contact with the group was completely cut off.
At the same time, the dimensions of the disaster continue to become clear. According to updated data published today by the authorities in Nepal, the number of dead has risen to 903 and the number of missing has jumped to 4,247. The floods hit a mountainous and remote area that serves as a central route for travelers and pilgrims between Nepal and Tibet, and caused heavy damage to roads, bridges, buildings, and infrastructure.
Since the disaster, search and rescue efforts have continued in the affected areas. Thousands of military and police personnel are participating in the activity, and in the mountainous areas that were cut off from access routes, helicopters have been used to locate and rescue victims and to transfer equipment and supplies.
