The powerful earthquake that struck Colombia last August claimed lives and caused widespread destruction. Beyond the tragic impact on human life and infrastructure, the disaster has far-reaching consequences for the global coffee market.

The severe damage to the growing regions and the central port of Colombia, the world's third-largest coffee producer and one of the leading suppliers of high-quality Arabica coffee, has led to a complete halt of coffee exports from the country and could lead to a spike in coffee prices in the coming months.

But beyond the current crisis and the expected price increase, the disaster raises once again the question of the environmental cost of the coffee we drink. Coffee cultivation, even in normal times, is a resource-intensive industry that requires enormous amounts of water and energy.

Transporting coffee from tropical growing regions around the world involves significant environmental pollution. Recent studies, which point to severe damage to biodiversity as a result of conventional cultivation methods, suggest an alternative: agroforestry, where coffee plants grow alongside trees and natural vegetation, significantly reducing ecological damage and even improving the quality of the coffee beans.

So what can we, the consumers, do? The first step is awareness. It is possible and desirable to ask in cafes and roasteries about the origin of the beans and the cultivation methods, and to look for certification labels such as Fair Trade and organic coffee. At the same time, it is worth adopting more environmentally friendly habits, such as recycling capsules. However, it is important to remember that real and deep change requires a transition to sustainable agricultural methods and a significant reduction in the use of natural resources and chemicals at the global industrial level.
