Jermain Defoe has ended his role at Woking just a few months after being appointed to his first coaching job. The former Tottenham striker parted ways with the club "by mutual consent."
Jermain Defoe has ended his tenure as manager of Woking after just six official matches on the sidelines. The club from England's fifth tier announced today, Thursday, that it had reached an agreement with the former Tottenham, West Ham, and England national team striker to terminate their contract immediately.
43-year-old Defoe was appointed to the position in March, marking his first role as a head coach. He led Woking to a tenth-place finish in the National League last season and had already begun preparations for the 2026/27 campaign, but despite this, the parties decided to part ways.
In an official statement, the club reported: "Woking can confirm that the club and manager Jermain Defoe have reached a mutual agreement to part ways immediately. We would like to thank Jermain for his contribution during his time at the club and wish him the best of luck in the future."
The club further added: "The club remains focused on achieving its goals on and off the pitch. We thank the fans for their continued support."
Woking did not specify the reasons for the departure and have not yet announced who will replace Defoe on the sidelines ahead of the upcoming season. There is no doubt that this is not how the former star wanted to start his coaching career.
