Controversy at Mauthausen: Students tour concentration camp wearing shirts depicting a terrorist
A group of students visited the Mauthausen memorial wearing shirts featuring one of the perpetrators of the 1978 Coastal Road massacre. The guide did not stop the tour, while participants claimed it was a "protest against the genocide in Gaza."
A group of students arriving for a tour at the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria wore shirts featuring the Palestinian flag and the image of Dalal Mughrabi — one of the perpetrators of the 1978 Coastal Road massacre. Mughrabi was a member of the cell that carried out the attack, during which a bus was hijacked and dozens of Israelis, including children, were murdered.
In the documentation circulated from the tour, some of the students are seen wearing the shirts inside the camp grounds. According to the video, the group's guide does not stop the tour. Other students present at the scene are heard explaining that it is, according to them, a protest against the genocide in Gaza.
Controversy surrounding pro-Palestinian symbols in Buchenwald
In a similar case that occurred in recent months, a controversy arose at the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial site regarding demonstrations and pro-Palestinian activity. In February, it was reported that far-left organizations in Germany called for protests against the site's management after it banned the wearing of keffiyehs on the camp grounds — a decision that received backing from a German court.
The organizers accused the site's management of criminalizing pro-Palestinian activists and taking a pro-Israel stance, while the commissioner for the fight against antisemitism in Germany condemned the move, calling it an affront to the dignity of Holocaust victims and the culture of remembrance.
