An Italian priest in Milan sheltered terrified tourists from violent protesters inside his church and went viral after returning a middle finger to a rioter.

An Italian priest became a social media hero in Milan after protecting terrified tourists from violent protesters and responding with a middle finger. Father Gianicola Maria Simona was standing at the entrance of the Church of Sant'Alessandro dei Zebedia during street unrest.
Protecting Tourists and Responding to Unrest
When violent youths in black clothing began roaming the historic streets, Father Simona quickly opened the church doors to shelter stranded tourists and passersby. He stood at the threshold to block the rioters.
"There were a lot of people fleeing the rioters, and I let everyone in. They stayed here until the chaos passed," said the 65-year-old priest.
A viral video captured a protester gesturing offensively at the priest, who calmly returned a single middle finger. Simona confirmed the authenticity of the video, dismissing AI-generated rumors.

Simona expressed no regret for his actions, emphasizing they were non-violent and contextualized by the chaos.
