Without human touch: AI agents will start paying for themselves

Cloudflare is launching a new payment system designed specifically for artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The new development gives autonomous programs the ability to register and pay for digital services and access to programming interfaces (API) completely independently, without the need for a human to press a button.

Until now, AI agents seeking to perform complex tasks encountered a paywall or login pages designed for humans. The inability to verify identity and transfer payment stopped the AI in the middle of its work and forced it to ask a human for help.

To resolve this friction and support the trend that Cloudflare calls "agent commerce," the company has developed an architecture based on two types of wallets:

Account wallet — under the control of the human user who deposits funds into it and defines the trading rules.
Virtual wallet — assigned to the AI agent itself and operates using access keys instead of a login screen.

The virtual wallet is limited by a hard cap set by the main wallet. Any attempt to exceed the limit requires manual human approval. This mechanism gives agents the freedom to act and try out inexpensive services independently, while maintaining full expenditure control by the organization.

In addition, the company is introducing the cloudflare.pay system, which gives agents a readable and recognizable identity on the network. In an era where most internet traffic is generated by bots, providing a wallet, identity, and spending limits to AI agents is a crucial step toward a network where machines can do business safely and transparently.
