Spanish PM Sánchez Welcomes US Midterm Results as Defeat for Far-Right
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez praised US midterm election results, claiming they signal a global decline of the far-right and previewing Spain's upcoming elections.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed the US midterm election results, arguing they signal a global decline of the far-right. In a social media post on X, Sánchez linked the American vote to Spain's upcoming general elections scheduled for November 29, 2026.
According to Reuters, Sánchez wrote that American voters rejected policies that impoverished society, alongside hatred, sexism, and climate change denial, while also opposing elite privileges. He framed the outcome as a broader rejection of the right-wing agenda.
"The ultra-wave that Feijóo and Abascal are trying to ride is no longer growing; it is collapsing," Sánchez wrote, referencing Spanish opposition leaders Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal. He added that similar trends occurred in Brazil and the US, and will soon happen in Spain.
Other international leaders also reacted to the US results. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told Reuters that the outcome reflects a shift in voter sentiment toward policies closer to Norway's stance on climate and foreign affairs. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa noted that the results could open a new era in international relations after Democrats secured control of Congress.
