Amazon has begun removing some counterfeit squishies from its site after U.S. authorities warned that they may contain hazardous materials and fail to meet safety requirements.
Health risks
The removal of these products follows an alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), issued in August regarding counterfeit squishies sold in the United States. According to the commission, some products do not meet federal safety requirements for children's toys and may contain substances such as lead and phthalates, as well as water beads and small parts.
Lack of regulation
Furthermore, in many cases, these products are sold without safety warnings, age labeling, manufacturer details, or required product information. The CPSC notes that toys intended for children must undergo testing at an approved laboratory and be certified in accordance with safety regulations.
Due to these concerns, Amazon has begun removing items from its site that were found to be in violation of the law, regulations, or company policy. The CPSC stated that it has identified 55 shipments of counterfeit squishies at U.S. ports so far, totaling 355,683 units that were blocked and denied entry into the country.
