Hang-Gliding Crash Kills Tourist and Instructor in Rio de Janeiro
An Argentine tourist and a Brazilian instructor died Monday in a hang-glider crash at São Conrado Beach in Rio de Janeiro, prompting authorities to suspend local flight activities.
An Argentine tourist and a Brazilian flight instructor were killed on Monday in a hang-gliding crash at São Conrado Beach in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The victims were identified as 26-year-old Adrian Guillermo Arismendi and 45-year-old Luiz Eduardo Rodrigues dos Santos.
The two had taken off from the Pedra Bonita launch site in Tijuca National Park, located approximately 517 meters above sea level. According to witnesses, the hang-glider lost altitude and suffered a structural failure or stall during the final approach, crashing near the retaining wall separating the promenade from the beach.
Emergency services and firefighters arrived at the scene to find both men in critical condition with cardiorespiratory arrest. They were rushed to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, where medical teams attempted resuscitation, but the municipal health department later confirmed that both succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities noted that Arismendi was on his very first hang-gliding flight, while Rodrigues dos Santos was an experienced instructor with a decade of involvement in free flight. Following the tragic accident, local free-flight activities were suspended, and the Civil Police launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause.
