Massive Tesla recall: 2,740,642 vehicles at risk due to a malfunction
Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, is recalling 2,740,642 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured in China. The company's Shanghai plant supplies not only the local Chinese market but also export markets across Asia and Europe.
Elon Musk, owner of the car company Tesla, announced this morning, Friday, an unprecedented recall of more than 2 million vehicles following the discovery of a serious system malfunction.
Tesla is recalling 2,740,642 vehicles of the Model 3 and Model Y types manufactured in China. The recall covers units of Tesla's two best-selling models, and the vehicles are being immediately removed from production lines at the company's plant in Shanghai. This facility is responsible for supply not only to the local Chinese market but also to export markets across Asia and Europe.
This is not Tesla's first recall of this magnitude. In January 2024, the company took a similar step for more than 1.6 million vehicles in China, addressing issues with the autopilot function and door locking mechanisms. Both issues were flagged by China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the body that oversees product safety.
Subsequently, in January 2025, another recall affected more than 1.2 million vehicles. Of these, 871,087 were Model 3 and Model Y units produced locally between January 2022 and September 2023. The issue at that time involved the electronic power steering system.
As previously reported, Elon Musk recently considered the possibility of selling the manufacturer's plants in China as part of a merger process with SpaceX. The reason for this is potential regulatory difficulties, given that SpaceX is involved in military projects with the US government, and officials may be unwilling to accept that Tesla maintains production operations in China.
