Syrian President: Working to achieve a security agreement with Israel
Ahmad al-Shara told Al Jazeera that Damascus is working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the partnership of several countries. He added that if realized, the agreement would pave the way for "comprehensive peace." Al-Shara clarified that "we do not intend to carry out any military intervention in Lebanon."
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara told the Qatari channel Al Jazeera today that Damascus is "working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the partnership of several countries." Al-Shara further emphasized:
"If a security agreement with Israel succeeds, then it will pave the way for a comprehensive peace without waiving Syria's right to the occupied Golan Heights."
Al-Shara also told the channel that lifting economic sanctions on Syria will not be effective without removing it from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. He added that there is a slowdown in the implementation of the agreement with the Kurdish forces, but Damascus is still relying on it. Regarding relations with Moscow, the Syrian president said that discussions with Russia regarding the future of military bases on the country's territory have not yet concluded.
Against the backdrop of proposals from the Donald Trump administration that al-Shara act against Hezbollah, the Syrian president clarified:
"We do not intend to carry out any military intervention in Lebanon. We are discussing with the Lebanese government solutions that will help bring Lebanon to a safe place. The solution in Lebanon is not necessarily a security solution. We are working on a comprehensive approach to the crisis."
Alongside this, he confirmed that any chaos in Lebanon will directly affect the situation in Syria. "We support the Lebanese state's monopoly on weapons and on decisions regarding war and peace. We are also concerned about the expansion of the war in the region. We are avoiding confrontation with Israel and we have no interest in it," he stated.
The newspaper Al-Modon reported today, Sunday, on a meeting between senior Syrian and American officials in mid-July, in which requests and conditions from the USA were emphasized, especially regarding the attempt by the Ahmad al-Shara regime to avoid involvement in any military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese newspaper, deep disagreements were recorded behind the scenes between political and military officials from both sides.
