Rising Tensions and Iranian Threats

One hundred and thirty-four days have passed since the last direct missile barrage from Iran toward Israel on the night of June 7-8, following IDF strikes in Beirut. While no similar direct salvos have occurred since, tensions remain exceptionally high. On Tuesday, Seyed Mohammad Marandi, a former advisor to the Iranian negotiating team, issued a severe threat on X, stating that the Zionist regime will soon face a painful and unforgettable lesson. In another post, he commented on upcoming elections in Israel, claiming Tehran views Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as uniquely damaging to the country.

These warnings arrive against the backdrop of repeated alerts from Netanyahu regarding the Iranian regime. Last week, in an interview with Army Radio, Netanyahu warned that Iran and its proxies might attempt attacks ahead of the vote, though he clarified he has no intention of initiating a preemptive strike before polling day. Earlier in September, he stressed that any Iranian aggression would trigger an unprecedented counterstrike. On Sunday, Netanyahu outlined an updated security doctrine shifting from containment to aggressive threat prevention, including preemptive strikes.

Hezbollah Alert and Economic Pressure

Meanwhile, indications of escalation emerge from Lebanon. According to a report by the Emirati outlet Erem News, Tehran has instructed Hezbollah to raise its military readiness ahead of a perceived regional conflict. Lebanese security sources report that the organization is mobilizing operatives and preparing independent operational units capable of functioning even if senior leadership is compromised. However, sources emphasized that no final decision to launch an all-out war has been made.

Simultaneously, economic pressure on Tehran continues to mount. On October 8, the USA imposed additional sanctions on networks and vessels handling Iranian oil, targeting 17 ships, followed by further penalties against 16 individuals and 10 entities. According to Reuters, Iran's maritime crude exports dropped to near-zero in early October due to strict enforcement. This severe economic squeeze coincides with an annual inflation rate reaching 73.6% in September and a 35% collapse in the local currency's value against the dollar since July.

Security Assessment Ahead of Elections

This volatile geopolitical landscape unfolds just one week before the elections to the 26th Knesset. Amid ongoing indirect diplomatic maneuvers, Netanyahu held an unannounced meeting on Monday at the Ovda Airbase with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Despite soaring rhetoric and elevated regional alert levels, Israeli security officials report no immediate operational indicators suggesting an imminent Iranian strike.
