Why You Should Avoid Adding Bananas to Berry Smoothies

Research from the University of California, Davis, reveals that combining bananas with berries in a smoothie can neutralize up to 84% of beneficial flavanols. This is caused by the enzyme polyphenol oxidase found in bananas.

If you are in the habit of chopping a sweet banana and throwing it into a blender along with a handful of colorful berries to start your day, we have some important news. This habit, which many believe provides an essential health boost, may actually neutralize the most nutritious components of your drink.

The popular YouTube channel Simnett Nutrition, led by nutritionist Derek, revealed alarming data from laboratory tests conducted at the University of California, Davis. As the expert explains: "The researchers found that those who consumed smoothies with high enzyme levels from bananas experienced an 84 percent drop in flavanol levels in their bodies." This dramatic decline occurs within just a few minutes of blending.

The 'destructive enzyme' that eliminates antioxidants

The main culprit is a powerful enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), found in high concentrations in bananas. As soon as a banana is cut and exposed to oxygen, the enzyme begins to break down flavanols—critical antioxidants found in berries, grapes, and cocoa.

These components are responsible for improving blood flow, protecting blood vessels, preventing memory decline, and improving insulin sensitivity. When combined with bananas, these benefits effectively disappear from your drink.

Don't throw the bananas away

Experts emphasize that this is not a toxic substance or an immediate life-threatening danger, but merely a reduction in nutritional value. The banana itself remains an excellent fruit rich in potassium and fiber, but combining it with berries is a mistake.

As the nutritionist clarifies: "Knowing this, will I stop drinking banana and berry smoothies? Absolutely not, I will continue to drink them." While absorption is severely impaired, it is not completely blocked.

Saving the smoothie: smart alternatives

To maximize the health benefits, it is recommended to upgrade your drink's composition. Replacing the banana with fruits low in the problematic enzyme, such as mango or peach, will allow the berries to maintain their full potency.

Another approach is to separate the ingredients: eat berries and cocoa as a separate snack, and reserve the banana for drinks that do not rely on flavanol-rich components.

Action steps:

  1. Separate components: stop mixing bananas with berries, grapes, or cocoa powder in the same blender.

  2. Switch to safe alternatives: replace the banana with fresh mango to achieve a thick, rich texture without the destructive enzyme.

  3. Separate consumption: eat fresh berries as a snack or in a salad to ensure full absorption of antioxidants.

  4. Avoid thawed bananas: do not use frozen bananas that have thawed and turned brown, as this process accelerates the activity of the destructive enzyme.

The warning: 'paralysis by analysis'

It is important not to fall into excessive nutritional anxiety that leads to abandoning fruits and vegetables. As the nutritionist warns: "If you get caught up in these small details of what inhibits the absorption of what, it is very easy to reach paralysis by analysis." The general public does not need to stress, but simply avoid basic combination mistakes.
