As Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI chatbot, prepares for an initial public offering in mid-November, its major rival OpenAI is accelerating talks to secure commitments from investors, Reuters reported on Tuesday. This exceptionally rapid fundraising campaign is designed to preempt its competitor's public market debut and could propel the ChatGPT developer's valuation past the $1.4 trillion mark.

OpenAI's tight schedule stems partly from the desire to block Anthropic, as the two front-line labs battle for a similar investor base. OpenAI wants to capitalize on recent momentum and revenue growth following the launch of new models. Entities currently in talks to join a funding round of approximately $30 billion include SoftBank Group, Abu Dhabi's MGX fund, and other institutional investors. Both OpenAI and SoftBank declined to comment, while Anthropic and MGX did not issue statements.

The rapid pace of events highlights intense competition between the two AI giants for available capital, with both aspiring to astronomical trillion-dollar valuations. This unfolds against a backdrop of growing concerns over rising interest rates, sharp volatility in tech stocks, and stricter scrutiny of artificial intelligence valuations.

Infrastructure and Financial Strategy

OpenAI held a series of meetings last week with long-term funds and sovereign wealth funds, coinciding with Anthropic's investor day. OpenAI's fundraising is expected to progress much faster than typically anticipated for an offering of this scale. Investors familiar with the company note that beyond countering Anthropic, the capital is vital for OpenAI to fund its substantial infrastructure commitments and strengthen its balance sheet.

Despite high demand for both companies' shares, investors face the complex challenge of evaluating and allocating capital to two competing offerings just weeks apart. Market analysts suggest OpenAI's aggressive funding push aims to lock in capital from funds that might otherwise allocate significant resources to Anthropic's IPO.

Financial Metrics and Accounting Dispute

To attract investors, OpenAI highlights growth accelerated by the rollout of the GPT-6 Astra model. The company reports reaching an annualized revenue run rate of $50 billion and expects to hit $70 billion by year-end. Meanwhile, Anthropic reported annualized revenues of approximately $65 billion as of July, with third-quarter revenue surging to $16.8 billion compared to $11.6 billion in the second quarter. However, slowing month-over-month growth has sparked investor concerns.

OpenAI's strategy seeks to complete its funding round before Anthropic's financial disclosures provide investors with a complete picture of its business, potentially inviting direct comparisons and scrutiny over revenue forecasts and accounting methods.
