Users of the paid ChatGPT plan recently discovered a new button offering to reset their weekly usage quota for 8 dollars. The new option, which was not officially announced, appeared for subscribers who reached their usage limit. The company confirmed they are testing ways to allow users to purchase additional usage to make products more accessible.

How much will it cost you?

Resetting the quota allows users to immediately restore their usage volume to 100% without waiting five hours for the automatic renewal. For professional users paying between 25 and 50 dollars a week for work plans, a one-time payment of 8 dollars may represent a significant saving. Users can choose to wait for the regular renewal period, but the new option provides greater flexibility during ongoing work.

The new feature joins a series of benefits that OpenAI has been distributing recently, such as free resets and free access for students. At the current growth stage, technology companies see these benefits as a vital investment in customer acquisition and creating regular usage habits. Furthermore, it is a key weapon in the war for user loyalty against the major competitor Anthropic, which offers Claude users credits and similar benefits to attract them.

The managers' personal battle

This intense competition often spills over into personal matters on social networks. This week, the head of the Codex division at OpenAI, Thibault Sottiaux, and the head of the Claude Code division at Anthropic, Boris Cherny, clashed on Twitter. After a user mistakenly complained to Sottiaux about a malfunction in his Anthropic account, Cherny suggested he switch companies. In response, Sottiaux announced a free reset of usage quotas for all paid Codex and ChatGPT Work users.

This is not the first confrontation between the two giants. Last May, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced two months of free use for new businesses. Less than an hour later, Anthropic responded by announcing a 50% increase in weekly usage quotas for Claude users. This economic struggle proves that in the battle for control of the AI market, the biggest winners so far are the users themselves.
