No need to dig: The ready-made pools that are changing the summer at home
The trend that started with shipping containers continues to more accessible solutions: metal plunge pools, ready-made pools, and other ways to create a summer corner in the yard without major renovation.
If shipping containers were once used only for transporting goods, today they are already turning into homes, offices, cafes – and now also into designer swimming pools. The new trend, which is gaining momentum in the USA and starting to spread to the UK and Australia, offers an alternative to traditional concrete pools: a modular unit that arrives almost ready for use, without months of earthworks and renovation.
The pools are based on standard shipping containers that undergo a full conversion. They include a fiberglass shell reinforced with steel, built-in filtration and plumbing systems, stairs, and sometimes a panoramic glass window that gives them the look of a luxury infinity pool. After delivery, it remains mainly to place them and connect to infrastructure. The big advantage is the installation time. While a concrete pool usually requires weeks and even months of work, a container pool can be placed in a relatively short time. Also, the modular structure allows it to be placed in narrow yards, on sloping lots, as part of a wooden deck, and even – subject to engineering approval – on roofs. Some models can even be moved in case of moving house. Prices in the USA, as can be seen on Amazon, start at about $6,400 for basic models, while more equipped models are sold for about $11,700, before the costs of transportation, site preparation, and connection to infrastructure.
And what about Israel? The idea of pools from containers is not new in Israel either. About a decade ago, we told you about the idea of turning a shipping container into a private swimming pool - a concept that aroused interest then mainly thanks to its simplicity and creativity. At that time, container pools were mainly a DIY (do-it-yourself) project or a solution implemented on a case-by-case basis: containers that underwent conversion, cladding, and adjustments and turned from an industrial storage unit into a water corner in the yard. It was not yet an off-the-shelf product, but rather an intriguing idea that was on the margins of the design and gardening world. The charm of the idea remains the same: to take a structure intended for transporting goods and give it a new life, while saving some time and some of the construction work required for a regular concrete pool. However, turning a container into a pool does not end with just placing a tank and filling it with water - waterproofing, reinforcement, installation of filtration and water treatment systems, and safety adjustments are required.
Since then, the trend has developed in the world and received a more professional version: instead of just home conversions, companies began to appear that produce ready-made container pools, with built-in systems, stairs, lighting, and sometimes side glass windows that give them the luxury look of a hotel pool. In Israel, such pools are not yet a common solution, but the idea fits into a broader trend of modular and quick-to-install water solutions.
Alongside the large container pools, another trend has entered in recent years that is especially suitable for smaller yards: Stock Tank Pools. These are galvanized metal tanks that were originally used in agriculture for watering animals and have become a sought-after design item in private gardens. Their simple and industrial look has actually become an advantage - it blends well in gardens and gives a modern twist. The tanks marketed as garden plunge pools do not replace a full swimming pool, but offer a more accessible solution for those who want a cooling corner in the summer without getting into a construction project. These plunge pools are much smaller than a regular swimming pool, require less space, and are also suitable for urban yards or homes where it is not possible to carry out complex construction work. With additions like a filter pump, a wooden deck around, lighting, or plants, even a simple metal tank can become a central design element in the yard.
One of the prominent advantages of tank plunge pools is also the price. Compared to permanent pools or even some of the designer wooden plunge pools, this is usually a more accessible solution, as their simple structure allows for relatively low costs, so their price usually ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 NIS for basic models, and larger versions or those that include a filtration system and pool adjustments reach about 6,000–9,000 NIS. Alongside them, there are other solutions today such as ready-made fiberglass pools, designer above-ground pools, and small pools for urban yards - all part of the same trend: less infrastructure work, more flexibility, and more ways to turn the home into a vacation spot.
