Oops: Politician reads AI instruction aloud during speech

Anyone who has spent time online recently has learned to spot the "fingerprints" of artificial intelligence: generic openings, long dashes, or editing instructions accidentally left in the final text. This week, Bill Oliver, a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada, went a step further by reading an AI prompt aloud during his speech without realizing it.

Oliver was delivering a routine speech regarding the risks of establishing government ombudsman offices.

"One of the problems is that citizens sometimes develop expectations that exceed the actual powers of the office. Here is a more natural and fluid version of this passage, which sounds like a legislator's speech and not like a series of short bullet points."

This sentence, which sounds as if it were lifted directly from a ChatGPT chat window, immediately exposed the speech's true source. While the incident passed almost unnoticed in real time, the video has since gone viral on Reddit and Threads, receiving extensive coverage in major media outlets such as the CBC and the Toronto Star.

Oliver is certainly not the first politician to utilize speechwriters—human or digital—but the fact that he read the editing instructions without noticing makes this one of the most embarrassing AI-related blunders to date.

This incident follows previous cases involving lawyers and academics who were exposed due to AI-generated errors. According to a study from Duke University, many in the workforce fear that the open use of artificial intelligence will damage their professional reputation and lead to them being labeled as lazy—a fear that, in Oliver's case, proved to be justified.
