OpenAI Slashes Prices: Surprising News for ChatGPT Users
Following increasing competition from Chinese companies and Anthropic, OpenAI is lowering the prices of its popular models by double-digit percentages, though analysts warn of potential consequences for the company's financial future.
The technology giant OpenAI, the American company founded in 2015 and the creator of ChatGPT and the GPT family of language models, has reduced prices for its low and mid-tier models following increasing competition from Chinese firms offering more affordable alternatives.
According to a report by the Reuters news agency, the artificial intelligence company led by Sam Altman has lowered the price of the GPT-5.6 Luna model. Additionally, it reduced the price of the mid-tier Terra model by 20%, while the price of its largest model, Sol, remained unchanged.
This move is welcome news for companies utilizing OpenAI's technology. In effect, businesses will pay less for every million "tokens" they purchase. The cost of processing text with the Luna model will drop to 20 cents per million tokens, down from the previous price of one dollar. Furthermore, the cost for the Terra model will decrease to 2 dollars, compared to 2.50 dollars.
This strategic move is expected to intensify competition against Anthropic, whose Claude models are widely used by large enterprises, despite being considered premium-priced in the market.
Analysts estimate that the price reduction will drive broader adoption of OpenAI and Anthropic technologies, but may impact the company's financial standing ahead of its IPO. OpenAI stated that the price cuts were made possible, among other factors, by profits generated from the GPT-5.6 model and its advanced programming capabilities.
