We found the most expensive omelet sandwich in the country
After eating the cheapest omelet sandwich in the country for 15 shekels, we paid 42 shekels this week for an omelet sandwich in the center. But it is not just the geographical distance between the two places that explains this huge gap.
Last week, we told you about the cheapest omelet sandwich in the country, costing only 15 shekels on the way to the north. While searching for it, I also stumbled upon the most expensive omelet sandwich. Why focus on the cost of such a simple dish? Because it is the ultimate basic, "home-style" sandwich that you can eat anytime. Despite having more exciting options for a quick bite, this sandwich remains incredibly popular. We thought price was a key factor, but a 42-shekel sandwich represents a 180% increase over the cheapest one.
Geography plays a part: I drove to the Golani Junction for the cheapest one, while the expensive one was found on the main street of Hod HaSharon at a place called 'Rak Challa' ('Only Challa'). However, the price is about more than just location. 'Rak Challa' is a street food joint where dishes are served inside a challah. The counter offers a vast array of toppings, and the place is impeccably clean and organized. Two employees serve customers quickly and politely.
The selection of toppings is impressive, ranging from fresh vegetables and pickles to tahini, matbucha, hummus, harissa, and thick slices of fried eggplant. The challah itself is not just bread; it is half a loaf of fluffy, slightly sweet bread with a shiny glaze and sesame seeds. In reality, the omelet is just an excuse for this culinary creation. Packing all these ingredients requires professional skill: arranging everything in the right order, carefully squashing the soft challah, and wrapping it in paper. The staff performs this with precision while keeping a close eye on the customers.
It is no wonder they charge 42 shekels for a sandwich served with such care in a beautiful box. This is a substantial lunch, not just a snack on the go. Would I pay 50 shekels for it on Wolt, including service fees and tips? Probably not. But 42 shekels is a fair price for a portion that will satisfy even the hungriest appetite.
