The Negev region is facing a severe wave of rampant gunfire, affecting both Jewish and Bedouin communities alike. From Rahat and Tel Sheva to Omer, Retamim, Nevatim, and Givot Bar, residents live in constant fear as arms dealers test weapons in broad daylight and at night.

The Scourge of Test Firings and Illegal Weapons

Local authorities and residents report that criminals routinely use open areas for target practice before selling weapons. "There is regular night shooting," said a resident of Nevatim. "By the time the police reach deep into the area, the criminals have already vanished." Despite police efforts and volunteer patrols, locals feel that deterrence has collapsed. A resident from a Bedouin locality described the situation as the "Wild West," noting that children are no longer allowed to walk home from school alone due to safety concerns.

Rahat Mayor Talal al-Krenawi expressed confidence in the police but stressed that the sheer volume of weapons necessitates a permanent police headquarters in Rahat rather than temporary deployments. While he noted a recent drop in gunfire within the city, he emphasized that shooting resumes the moment security forces leave.

Strategic Threat and Calls for Action

Local council heads are demanding decisive state intervention. Nir Zamir, head of the Bnei Shimon Regional Council, called the situation an intolerable failure of governance affecting all Negev residents. Meanwhile, Omer Council Head Erez Badash went further, linking the violence to strategic threats warned of by the Shin Bet, citing radicalization, illegal weapons smuggling, and cross-border marriages with women from Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip.

In response, the Israel Police stated that all emergency calls to the 100 hotline are addressed immediately, highlighting ongoing operational activities, arrests, and weapons seizures that have led to an overall reduction in shooting incidents.
