Every year, the Earth crosses the orbit of the comet "Swift-Tuttle," which leaves behind a trail of dust particles and rock fragments. When these particles enter the atmosphere at a speed of about 60 kilometers per second, intense friction with the air heats them up, causing them to burn.

The bright streak in the sky, commonly known as a "falling star," is not a real star but a trail of ionized gas burning at an altitude of approximately 100 kilometers. The August 2026 meteor shower (the Perseids) reaches its peak this week, with the most intense activity expected between the nights of August 12 and 13. Recommended viewing time: from 01:00 AM until sunrise. The expected rate is 50–100 meteors per hour under optimal dark conditions.

Tips for optimal viewing:

  • Escape light pollution: Watching from within a city will reveal only a few isolated meteors. The most recommended areas are the Ramon Crater, the Arava, the Negev Mountains, or the southern Golan Heights.

  • No optical equipment: Telescopes and binoculars restrict the field of view. The naked eye is the most effective tool for spotting meteors passing quickly across the sky.

  • Maintain night vision: The eyes require about 20–30 minutes to adapt to complete darkness. A single glance at a mobile phone screen resets this process. To navigate in the field, use a flashlight with a red beam.

  • Maximum comfort: Plan to lie on a mat, in a sleeping bag, or on an adjustable chair. Watching in a standard sitting position quickly causes unnecessary neck strain.

  • Warm gear: Nights in the desert and mountainous areas are surprisingly cool even in the peak of summer. It is recommended to bring light, long-sleeved clothing and a thermos of hot drink.
