Moderna is on track to become Wall Street's stock of the year, though the road there has been far from smooth. The biotech firm's stock, closely associated with mRNA vaccines during the pandemic years, has surged by about 652% since the beginning of 2026, as of the market close on October 30. This makes it the top-performing stock in the S&P 500 index, ahead of SanDisk, Dell Technologies, and Micron.

A Volatile Rally and Clinical Trials

It has not been an easy ride. On October 22, Moderna's stock plunged by 25.2% in a single trading day, marking the sharpest daily drop in the company's history, following a leak of detailed results from a Phase 3 trial of its personalized cancer vaccine, developed in partnership with Merck.

The experimental treatment combines a patient-specific mRNA vaccine with Merck's Keytruda. In a trial involving high-risk melanoma patients, the combination reduced the risk of disease recurrence or death by 42% compared to Keytruda alone. While clinically positive, investors seemingly expected more, partly following earlier and more promising data.

Shifting Beyond Covid-19

Moderna's rally began in August when the company and Merck announced trial success. For Moderna, this marks an effort to prove its technology is no longer dependent solely on Covid-19 vaccines, but can serve as a platform for cancer treatments and other medical fields. For Merck, the drug could prove vital ahead of the upcoming patent expiration for Keytruda, its primary revenue engine.

Overall survival data for the combination therapy are not yet mature, and investors will be eager to see whether the success can be replicated in other types of cancer. Moderna remains a volatile investment rather than a safe bet, as high clinical expectations can easily trigger sell-offs even on positive news.
