Michigan Senate Race: Controversial Ad Blaming Aid to Israel Sparks Outrage
A controversial political ad in Michigan links supermarket inflation to US aid for Israel, drawing fierce accusations of antisemitism as the tight Senate race between Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers enters its final week.

A political advertisement in Michigan has sparked intense controversy ahead of the upcoming US Senate midterm elections, placing the US funding for Israel at the center of the economic debate. The commercial, produced by the progressive PAC Rebellion founded by The Young Turks creator Cenk Uygur, depicts an American couple in a supermarket discussing household expenses. When the wife asks her husband to put back eggs for the children, she remarks that they need to save the money to fund operations in the Middle East. Uygur defended the ad on social media, arguing that American taxpayers suffer economically to support foreign military aid.
The advertisement has drawn sharp condemnation from Jewish organizations and leaders, who accused the creators of scapegoating Israel and employing antisemitic tropes regarding Jewish influence and money. Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, called the commercial a textbook case of antisemitism. Meanwhile, the campaign of progressive Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed distanced itself from the ad, stating it has no official connection to the campaign, though it did not explicitly condemn the video's messaging. El-Sayed is running a tightly contested race against Republican nominee Mike Rogers for the Senate seat currently held by retiring Democrat Gary Peters.
The Michigan Senate race has drawn heavy national attention, with President Donald Trump actively campaigning for Rogers. During a rally in Port Huron, Trump launched scathing attacks against El-Sayed, questioning his background and accusing him of ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Trump also criticized Jewish voters supporting the Democratic candidate. El-Sayed forcefully denied the accusations, accusing Republicans of racism and bigotry intended to distract voters from pressing domestic issues such as the rising cost of living.
The rally also featured an unexpected appearance by rapper Nicki Minaj, who traveled to Michigan aboard Air Force One and later joined Trump on stage to voice her strong support. The high-stakes Senate contest in Michigan remains one of the pivotal races that will determine the balance of power in the US Congress.
