Tourist Destroys Bali Villa with Fire While Trying to Kill Spiders
A tourist in Bali accidentally destroyed a villa worth $110,000 after using a burning paper to get rid of spiders, causing a massive fire on October 5.

A 45-year-old tourist staying at a villa in Bali, Indonesia, accidentally destroyed the entire property while trying to get rid of spiders in the bathroom using a burning piece of paper. The incident occurred on October 5 in the Tibubeneng area of North Kuta, according to the Indonesian news agency ANTARA.
The tourist, identified as 45-year-old Nepali national Gaurap Rana, noticed spiders in the bathroom and decided to use a burning piece of paper to drive them away. After setting the paper on fire inside the bathroom, Rana left the room and walked to the villa's study, unaware of the danger.
According to local police, strong winds blew the burning paper up to the roof, which was made of dry alang-alang grass, a highly flammable material commonly used for traditional thatched roofs in the region. The flames quickly engulfed the roof and spread rapidly across the villa, fueled by hot, dry weather and strong winds.
Seven fire trucks and dozens of personnel were deployed to the scene, battling the blaze for approximately two hours and using about 60,000 liters of water. Property damage was estimated at around $110,000 USD, though no injuries were reported. Local authorities launched an investigation into the incident, while it remains unclear whether the tourist will face legal action.
