US Move Against Hezbollah: "An Iranian Terrorist Organization"
The US has reclassified Hezbollah as an organization operating under the direct command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and has imposed new sanctions.
The American administration has defined Hezbollah as an Iranian arm as part of sanctions imposed on the terrorist organization. This was reported Thursday by the Reuters news agency, citing a statement that has not yet been officially published, describing the move as another step against the Iranian axis.
According to the report, the US Treasury Department is reclassifying Hezbollah as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" organization due to "its services for the Iranian regime, under the command of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps." An American official told Reuters that the reclassification is intended to demonstrate that Hezbollah acts on behalf of the Iranian regime.
It should be noted that Hezbollah was first defined as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" organization in 2001, but the current decision adds a new legal basis to the classification. The organization is also subject to US sanctions under the definition of a "Foreign Terrorist Organization."
Additionally, the US imposed sanctions today on 10 individuals accused of smuggling cash for Hezbollah. The American official stated that these steps are separate from other actions the US intends to take soon against Iran as part of an economic siege. President Donald Trump hopes these measures will force the Ayatollah regime to compromise in an agreement to end the war.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated earlier today that he will hold a press conference next Monday regarding the "toughest sanctions in history" that Washington intends to impose on Iran.
