Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé faced a massive commercial and diplomatic backlash in China after a lighthearted comment about Mao Zedong resurfaced online. During an appearance on a talk show hosted by French teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni, Mbappé was asked about popular internet memes depicting him as various historical dictators, a running joke sparked by a social media moniker and a legal dispute with a French influencer.

Laughing, the French forward remarked that his favorite meme featured his face superimposed on Mao Zedong, casually describing the founder of the People's Republic of China as a "Chinese dictator." Although the clip was originally recorded months prior, it was released on social media ahead of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, instantly triggering a furious reaction from Chinese state media, patriotic netizens, and government officials.

The fallout was swift and devastating in the world's most lucrative commercial market. Chinese state television suspended La Liga broadcasts, major sponsors terminated their contracts with Mbappé overnight, and his image was scrubbed from online video games and promotional billboards across the country. The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned the remarks, stating that they deeply hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, while social media users flooded platforms like Weibo with demands for severe boycotts and punishment.

Faced with catastrophic commercial losses, both Mbappé and Real Madrid issued groveling public apologies. The French star expressed deep regret for any offense caused, and the club emphasized its immense respect for China, its history, and its culture. Despite these concessions, the boycott largely remained in place, highlighting the unforgiving nature of Beijing's zero-tolerance policy regarding historical figures and the immense leverage Beijing holds over Western sports stars and global institutions.
