Tens of thousands of people took part in nationwide protests across Italy on Friday as part of a 24-hour general strike. Demonstrations were held in more than 40 cities, demanding higher wages, stronger public services, and protesting against the rising cost of living and increased military spending.

The strike was initiated by the Unione Sindacale di Base labor union. Clashes and tensions with security forces were reported at several locations across the country.

In Turin, police deployed water cannons against students and left-wing activists who approached security barriers surrounding the regional government building. In Rome, a large march passed near the Colosseum, with some protesters announcing plans to pitch tents and remain in the area through the weekend. Dumpsters were set on fire in several streets, and police later used water cannons to disperse a large crowd attempting to advance toward parliament. According to the Italian ANSA news agency, eight people were detained after repeatedly trying to breach police barricades.

Protests were also strongly felt in Milan, where demonstrators blocked the city's ring road, carried flares, and ignited objects before the march concluded outside the Polytechnic University of Milan.

Genoa Port Protests Against Arms Shipments

One of the most prominent focal points of the protest was at the port of Genoa, where approximately 15,000 dockworkers, students, and other demonstrators entered the port area. The protest there tied into broader European and global demonstrations against the use of ports for transferring arms shipments. Protesters also highlighted the deaths of maritime crew members in conflict zones ranging from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea.

The widespread protests in Italy come against the backdrop of a broader wave of demonstrations across Europe. In recent months, large-scale protests have been recorded in France, Spain, Belgium, and Albania, driven largely by the rising cost of living and mounting economic pressure on households.
