Bad news for Israel: Trump has lined up behind Vance as his replacement
The Washington Post claimed that the US President urged important donors to support his vice president as a candidate in the 2028 presidential election. It was also reported that Trump continued to ask his supporters whether Vance is preferable to Marco Rubio.
President Donald Trump recently told donors privately that he wants to see his vice president win the 2028 presidential election — a sign that he is open to publicly supporting J.D. Vance, even as some advisors warn that Trump has not yet decided with certainty on a successor.
"Ultimately, we have to choose J.D.," Trump said during a meeting in the Oval Office with donors about two weeks ago, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the subject.
The private remark stands in contrast to Trump's rhetoric over the past year, which publicly encouraged competition for his favor between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He has openly mused that the two would make a good joint ticket and has repeatedly refused to specify whom he prefers to see at the top.
Even as Trump promoted his vice president to donors in the Oval Office, he still scattered questions to people around him about Vance versus Rubio. A White House official said the president asked staff about both men during a trip on Marine One late last month.
